Saving to Pasco County
Due to the continued lobbing of the Pasco County Professional Firefighters to the Board of County Commissioners, to send out the counties health insurance policy for bid. The county has again saved a large amount of money. Last year it was 1.1 Million dollars. This year it was $960,000.

Save Our Services

In October of 2007, Governor Crist and the Florida State Legislature proposed a constitutional amendment that will reform property taxes. In order to enact this legislation, a referendum will be held January 29th.

The Florida Professional Firefighters support responsible tax reform. However, the current proposal is ill-conceived, will undermine local government's ability to properly finance services, and obviously will jeopardize public safety.

The Florida Professional Firefighters opposes the proposed constitutional amendment calling for property tax reductions because it will result in:

- Significantly reduced budgets for public safety agencies without providing an alternative funding source

- Firefighter and Paramedic Layoffs

- Increased response times to 911 calls resulting in potentially great fire losses and higher mortality incidents involving emergency medical calls.

- Increased injuries to firefighters due to personnel shortages resulting in higher workers compensation claims

- Curtailing the ability of Fire-Rescue departments to respond and assist in statewide or regional disasters, i.e. hurricanes and wildfires.

- Higher property insurance rates for homeowners and commercial property owners due to reduced fire protection (ISO Rating)

PERC impasse recommendations
PRESS RELEASE

On August 7, 2007 the State of Florida Public Employee Relations Commission's (PERC) special magistrate filed his recommendations on the impasse issues between the Pasco County Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 4420 and Pasco County. In his Recommendations Mr. Charles Hall stated that his wage "analysis shows Pasco County considerably (emphasis added)below the Local Labor Market and not able to compete for the most qualified job seekers" and that to help correct the problem the firefighters and paramedics should receive a 20% pay increase over a three year period. He also recommends improved medical leave incentives and an improved workers' compensation package for firefighters seriously injured in the line of duty.

It has long been the practice of this county's administration to ignore reasonable recommendations offered by PERC and has routinely dismissed them without regard to considerations listed under Florida Statutes. It is the intent of this organization to hold this county accountable for its actions during this impasse process and will not tolerate repeat violations of the past.
